Waitemata District Health Board’s child health service received an impressive $125,091 from the 2015 Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal.

The annual appeal raised $1.138M to support 11 children’s hospitals and wards throughout New Zealand and 2015 was the first year for Waitemata DHB as an official recipient.

The $125,091 donated enabled the purchase of key items of equipment the Well Foundation and the DHB applied for.

A range of equipment was on the wish list and is now being used across the Special Care Baby Units, surgical theatres and maternity wards at both North Shore and Waitakere hospitals and the Rangatira Children’s Ward.

The appeal success was celebrated at a special event at Countdown Lincoln Road in December 2015, including a cheque presentation and morning tea with staff members.

Speaking at the event, Countdown upper North Island Operations Manager, Stuart Worsnop said it was the fantastic staff and supportive local community that made the appeal such a triumph.

“There are so many individuals involved and they just pick it up and run with it to make the appeal what it is,” he said. “That’s why it’s so good to see a decent sized cheque at the end for this area – for the staff to see that result is great. We all work hard every day in our jobs, but today is the proudest day, knowing that we are making a difference and we are very grateful to the local community that got behind our efforts too.”

Funds were raised in many ways during the 12 week appeal including barbecues outside local supermarkets, raffles, special fundraising events and costume days.
