PULL DOWN BEDS

Help us raise $64,000 to purchase 13 foldaway beds and upgrade the sleeping solution for parents/caregivers for the tamariki on the Rangatira ward.

Being a paediatric ward, Rangatira needs parents/caregivers to stay with their tamariki to provide additional care and comfort, at what can be a very unsettling and scary time. The ward currently provides bedside recliner chairs, but many of these are old and no longer fit for purpose. With your help we can support families to care for their tamariki.

Caring for our tamariki

Every year an average of 1,366 tamariki are admitted onto Rangatira Ward at Waitakere Hospital, the only specialist paediatric ward in the Waitemata region. The average length of stay is 2.6 days, and the ward cares for children from birth to age 15 years. Care and treatment is provided for a wide range of acute medical conditions including bronchiolitis, pneumonia, feeding issues, eczema, asthma and cellulitis, as well as caring for those with long-term conditions and disability.

Being a paediatric ward, Rangatira needs parents/caregivers to stay with their tamariki to provide additional care and comfort, at what can be a very unsettling and scary time. Having a baby or child in hospital is also a very stressful and tiring time for parents and caregivers, and there are many reasons in a hospital environment that their sleep may be disturbed. However, it is essential that parents/caregivers get as much rest as possible so they are able to best care, support and reassure their unwell tamariki.

The ward currently provides bedside recliner chairs, but many of these are old and no longer fit for purpose. Ward staff regularly receives feedback and complaints from parents and caregivers who have been unable to rest, often for days at a time. It is essential we upgrade the sleeping solution for parents/caregivers who need to rested and stay close to their tamariki to be involved in their care.

What we need to do

We need to provide a parent/caregiver pull-down bed in each of Rangatira Ward’s 13 single rooms, supporting parents/caregivers to comfort and care for their tamariki. Pull-down beds are used in paediatric facilities around New Zealand and have recently been installed in the new Special Care Baby Unit and Waitakere Hospital. The preferred option is to install the same beds as SCBU, which have proved to be suitable for a high use hospital environment. These ‘Tiltaway’ beds save space during the day and provide a comfortable sleeping/resting option for parents at their child’s bedside overnight.

Each bed costs $4,864, and we need to raise enough to buy 13 of them.
