therapy play area
Upgrading the play area for children undergoing therapy
An upgraded children’s therapy play area at Waitākere Hospital will enhance the support and quality of resources for children receiving therapy, their whānau, and the clinicians who work with them.
Engaging in play-based therapy can support physical, cognitive, and social development, leading to better overall health and well-being in the long term.
The outdoor therapy play space at Waitākere Hospital was originally constructed and gifted to Waitākere Hospital by Rotary Henderson over a decade ago. The space has been appreciated by many specialist therapists and their young patients over that time.
The space is now in need of an upgrade and both Well Foundation and Waitākere Hospital are delighted that Rotary Henderson have generously offered to renovate the playground. Rotary volunteers have created the new concept design, and they will be removing all the old equipment, preparing the ground and installing the new equipment. Well Foundation is seeking support to outfit the playground with safe, high-quality, appropriate equipment which will enhance therapy options for clinicians and improve outcomes for their young patients, and to cover the ground in high-quality, state-of-the-art, artificial turf.
The play area will be accessible to children of all abilities through the inclusion of features such as ramps, sensory-friendly toys, and tactile elements. Children with mobility aids can practice their gross motor skills on suitable, even surfaces and gradients. Children with disabilities will be able to fully participate and enjoy the space, promoting a sense of inclusion for all users. Moreover, the play area will reflect the diversity of the community it serves by incorporating cultural artwork. By removing barriers to participation, we will create a more equitable environment where all children can benefit from therapy and play.
The upgraded therapy play area will play a significant role in early intervention and prevention efforts, helping to identify and address developmental delays, disabilities, and mental health issues at an early stage. This project will achieve long-term, positive impacts on the health and well-being of children and their families, promoting healthier outcomes for generations to come. The children in our community will benefit from a state-of-the art, fully accessible play area with the support and resources they need to thrive and succeed, regardless of their background or circumstances.
We seek to forge partnerships with local businesses and community groups alongside Rotary Henderson to turn this upgrade into a reality over the next 12 months.
