Thank You John!

The Well Foundation team recently farewelled long-serving board member Dr John Cullen, who has retired from his position after being involved with Well Foundation since we were first founded 10 years ago.

John has made an immeasurable contribution to our organisation and to innovation in healthcare across our region. Affectionately referred to as the ‘Father of Orthopaedics,’ John established the Auckland Hospital orthopaedic service with two other orthopaedic surgeons in 1971 and set-up the first-ever Waitematā acute and elective orthopaedic service at North Shore and Waitakere Hospitals in 2004, going on to oversee its subsequent growth and development.

John has been the clinical champion of several projects Well Foundation has helped make possible thanks to generosity from our supporters, including the Elective Surgery Centre and the design and development of Whenua Pupuke Clinical Skills Centre and the nearby lakefront garden. After retiring from his appointments with Waitematā in 2022, John continued with his support of Well Foundation as a trustee. John leaves an incredible legacy of improved care across the Waitematā region, and we’re honoured to have been able to work so closely with John over the past decade.
